Sails

I found a pic of my sails on my phone. It's not a great one, but you can definitely see the crisp-factor on them! I got the same sails from Westaway that Rory used in the Jester Challenge. They should zoom Beto right along!

  1. Hi Brad,
Beautiful looking sails. How much wind is there where you are? If light, you might want to consider a genoa or something fancier like a screecher.

  2. There is a good bit of wind most of the year, but the summmer has it's lulls. I have a brand new asymmetrical from a boat I had in high school for Beto. It has a 22' luff and a 15' foot. It's going to be a huge success aboard Beto, I believe! I got the sails heavier for ocean use mainly. My plans are top secret as of right now. Regardless, I have a massive asym for a 26' mono that should give her plenty of "oomph"!

  3. Wow - I'll be interested to hear how the assym works on the tiki. You will be using a sprit? I am looking at a symmetrical secondhand spin - new assyms are very pricey.
If you get big wind you will very quickly find the need for a reef in the jib and/or a storm sail. The standard jib starts to feel pressed at about 18 knots to windward.

  4. Yea my buddy is a marine architect, and we were going to try to figure out some sort of sprit to try it out. It would definitely be nice.

  5. If you don't mind me asking... how much did the Tiki 21 sails cost from Westaway?

  6. I think they were around 2k shipped, if I remember correctly. They definitely were not the cheapest option out there.
